Dance of the Dead

Genre : Horror | Thriller
Runtime : 59 Min
Director : Tobe Hooper

Plot : A story of a post - apocalyptic society where a teenager named Peggy gets involved with drug addicted biker and his friends.

Review : The third episode from the series of Masters of Horror by the famous director of Poltergeist and Texas Chainsaw Massacare. I just thought it would be better than the previous.

But it was just a thought which had not reality. From the very start it seemed pathetic to me. Didn't have the feel of Masters of Horror at all. Poor script, poor execution, poor direction, weird and silly acts. I thought I was watching some crap all the time. There was no substance in the whole episode. At least they had some twist or mystery at the climax but what's the use of it. It's so lame and cheap. Not a single thing to like about it. It is annoying to see it and I could not resist skipping 10 sec every now and then. I hope the series has better to offer next.

Final Verdict : No. Don't waste your time coz the episodes are not connected. Its very poor.

Dreams in the Witch-House

Genre : Horror | Thriller
Runtime : 55 Min
Director : Stuart Gordon

Plot : A student rents a room in an old boarding house and finds out that evil forces roams within the walls.

Review : The second episode from the series of Masters of Horror by the famous director of Re-Animator. I certainly had heard about this episode a lot and was eager to watch.

It will be early to say but this one is definitely better than the pilot episode. The story is concerned with a witch that resides in the house walls and enters into our world through the perfect intersection. There is some fair amount of gore in it which is required by the script and not placed without any reason. The direction is nice for a tv series. there are explicit scenes. It is quite different than the good going horror tales. A little scary at some places which was missing in the first. Still I feel that the actual terror is missing. It could have been made scarier. There could have been some sudden scenes to chill our spines. Still on whole it serves as a good one to watch at night. I even liked the climax unlike many others.

Final Verdict : Yes its worth a watch. Not too great of a horror but a good one definitely.

Incident on and Off a Mountain Road

Genre : Horror | Thriller
Runtime : 51 Min
Director : Don Coscarelli

Plot : While driving late night on a lonely road, Ellen distracted with her radio hits a car parked on road. She wishes to help the man least knowing that he is a monster.

Review : The first episode of the series I've heard so much from the director of the classics like Phantasm and Bubba-ho-tep. I truly had big expectations from this series and this was definitely not one of the best start.

The plot is simple consisting of a moonfaced stalking and slashing people. Iliked the opening scene and everything was going fine till the moonfaced came in the scene. I was like, ah its a slasher. Gone are the days when people used to fear of such masked man rushing on a killing spree. Today, it just leaves a little impact. Anyways we have a female lead on which the plot is focussed and that's the only good thing about it. How its not a weakling as a female always is. The climax is good but the whole rest movie is predictable. It turns out tobe an average start of the series, nothing special.

Final Verdict : Yes watch it when you are free. Its a very average episode and a one time watch definitely.

11-11-11

Genre : Horror | Thriller
Runtime : 90 Min
Director : Darren Lynn Bousman

Plot : An author travels to Barcelona to see his dying father after the death of his wife and child. He finds out that the number 11 is quite common with all the mishappenings in his life.

Review : From the makers of Saw 2,3 and 4. I guess that's enough to draw the attention over the movie. That was the hype of the movie, the reason everyone including I wanted to watch it.

OK the start was nice. I was gripped with the events and I had hope to find answers at the end. 11:11 is not just random but somewhat a phenomenon. I was hoping for something great. I developed some interest as the movie progressed and found myself anxious to find out what was happening.

But soon the events started lacking the continuity. Random things started happening to maybe creep the audience randomly without any reason. It all started bending on religious terms and coming altogether with the 11:11 phenomenon. This is not at all how I had expected it to be. Bousman seemed confused over what he was making. It was really an amateur attempt. I don't know how was acting. The script don't give much space to the lead to build and develop. The thing that was good was the twist in the end and that's what Bousman is famous for. But did it fit in well? I don't really think so. I could not guess it but actually it was out of the point. The movie flawed from its theme eventually and I lacked interest. I found myself forwarding things as I felt bored. This is not really something you would expect. I really think the concept was very good and could have been drafted a lot better.

Final Verdict : You don't have anything to watch and feeling bored? Watch it. Not at all recommended by me. Save your time.

Agneepath

Genre : Action | Crime | Drama
Runtime : 89 Min
Director : Karan Malhotra

Plot : The story is about a small village, Mandwa where Master Dinanath Chauhan teaches his son the path of fire – Agneepath.

Review : Let me be frank with you that I have not watched the original Big B version. But I have heard about it a lot. It comes out of Dharma Productions and the avatar of Sanjay Dutt is what dragged me to theatre. So my review goes unbiased as I can’t compare.

The start of the movie is impressing and the credit goes to Sanjay Dutt. He is looking just a xerox copy of a devil. There itself the thrill of the movie began to spread which continued with the growing Vijay played by Hritik. He also is looking absolutely stunning as usual. I would like to talk short that the whole first half was entertaining and thrilling with the killings and other violent stuff. The latter half was darker than the first and all the credit goes again to Sanjay Dutt.

Talking about acts, Kancha played by Sanjay is the highlight of the movie as predicted by the posters as well. The whole hype was with respect to him only. But you will find that there is a tough competitor for him in Rauf Lala played by Rishi Kapoor. He has delivered a great performance and he looked all real. Hrithik has done a nice job but I still feel, his voice could have been modified a bit to sound a bit strong. Priyanka Chopra has not much to offer.

The movie if weighed in terms of entertainment is very good. Although I felt that some sequences had no meaning at all. Few things could have been explained further. The love story of Vijay is a worthless attempt and more emphasis should have been laid on the origin of Kancha rather. Also the director seems pretty confused on the basic theme of the movie. As a result it has turned out to be a melodrama in the end. Still the movie stand out to be good and worth watch.

Overall the movie is dark, gruesome and thrilling mixed with the typical Bollywood melodrama. I never felt bored and could hear a lot of cheers from the audience in between. I didn't like the climax though.

Final Verdict : Hrithik fans should go for it definitely. Others also should try it as its really a good movie. Don’t compare Hrithik with Amitabh as he has done well in his part and it’s unfair to compare. Chikni Chameli is definitely screen scorching. Last and not the least, Kancha takes it away.

American Horror Story Season 1

Genre : Horror | Mystery | Drama
Runtime : 50 Min per episode (approx)
Director : Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk

Plot : A family of three moves to their new house at Los Angeles to reconcile their past and develop as a healthy family. Unfortunately, the mansion they move in is haunted.

Review : This is the first horror TV series I watched. I received mixed views from everyone but found the theme interesting. Who doesn’t want to watch ‘haunted house’ when today’s horror is limited to gore fest? At-least I am pretty much interested in such themes.

After I watched the pilot episode I could not form any opinion about it. It is very different from what we see. Also it was nothing like I had expected. The direction was a little different and I really could not understand what was happening. So I moved on to the second episode. Again there were many things happening at a nice pace and it left me off the hook. But I found myself tempting to watch the next. The same thing happened again and again and soon I found the show gripping me to it. I started liking it more and more with the episodes moving forward.

It can be the great acts by both the leads as well as the supporting cast. It can be mind boggling story of the show. It can be the explicit scenes and the combination of it with horror in a disturbing manner. Whatever it was, it gripped me completely. Later I found that suspense was built gradually and the revelations are good at the end. It was scary in moments but the motive was to create an eerie atmosphere I guess. There are lots of twists and turns in the series. It just doesn’t stick to one thing. It portrays ideally an American family and the disturbances of the family. Everything is screened nicely. The music and score is nice as well. The climax is not quite ordinary as well.

I would say that a combined effort from all of the cast and crew helped pull it off in an interesting manner. It’s not at all an ordinary haunted house tale. Its differently different. Something I hadn’t seen earlier. It’s quite creepy on whole really. I liked it though it’s not great. Still it manages to entertain as well as creep. You can definitely give it a try.

Final Verdict : Watch the first few episodes and you will watch it whole for sure. It’s quite different from others and creepy. It’s not a must watch but you may find it interesting. I personally liked it and found it good.

Real Steel

Genre : Action | Drama | Sci-Fi
Runtime :127 Min
Director : Shawn Levy

Plot : Set in 2020, where human boxing has been taken over by robot boxing, an ex-boxing fighter finds his hopeful rise to the top again through his 11 year old son.

Review : I had my eyes over this flick for so long and finally got to see it today. Why? C’mon it’s Hugh Jackman in a totally different avatar plus I get to see robot boxing plus the hype it got and plus the positive reviews. I guess that sounds like quite good enough reasons.

So the opening of movie just hinted about the character of Hugh in the movie. And it was a good opening really. I originally thought that it would be a basic entertainer as we have already seen hi-fi robot stuff in transformers but in the end I found myself judging wrong. Of course the movie is about robot boxing but that’s not the root theme of the movie. Unlikely to transformers, here the center lies in the relation of a father and a son through their robot, Atom. It involves you emotionally and touches your soul somewhere.

Technically, the CGI robots are pretty decent and not much hardcore. But I loved how Atom without talking anything or doing anything on his own created his own personality and that is a good character development. I loved the music, definitely matches up with the shots. Performance was pretty good and Dakota just did very well in his character. Evangeline is pretty for me. Yes the movie offers nothing new to our eyes and it’s pretty much predictable but stirs you up emotionally. Even at the climax you will find yourself cheering. It does not stretch at any point of time and is interesting and running on whole. I loved it.

Final Verdict : Don’t hop in with some expectations to see stuff like transformers and you will love it. At the end of it you might feel its better on whole. A must watch for kids, for Jackman’s fans, for Robot fans and others too.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

Genre : Horror | Fantasy | Thriller
Runtime : 99 Min
Director : Troy Nixey

Plot : A young child is sent by her mother to her divorced husband where she discovers some creatures who want to claim her as their own.

Review : Seriously? A remake of the classic? Don’t worry I have not seen the original and this was the reaction of almost every horror lover. I just knew one thing, I get to watch Katie Holmes after so much time and I was not gonna miss it. And seriously I had no expectations from it as well.

Surely I had no expectations but I was hoping for something atleast. I mean was I supposed to be scared of those creatures? I guess not. Anyways let’s not come to the verdict here. The movie started well and it created a ray of hope. Then came the beautiful sets and I was like, wow. Then began the creatures and helped building an eerie atmosphere. I liked it much. Katie Holmes looked pretty as usual. Then came the revelation of creatures and the crap began to litter covering the whole movie gradually.

Seriously? They were trying to sell the old formula on this pathetic and crawling script? The whole movie is predictable with dragging pace. Nothing shocking happened. Even the climax was pathetic. The concept was not bad but they wrote it poorly. Talking about acts, all did a nice job. The cinematography is really good with eye catching environment. The sets were very good. I hated the storyline. They wasted everything for a crappy script. There are very few moments of creepiness but they are not much effective on whole. The movie emerges out as just a time pass flick. I did not find it a total shit but it was below average.

Final Verdict : Can be avoided until you have a reason same as me. Watch it with your friends while gossiping. Last but not least, the title stands true – Don’t be afraid of the dark.

Friends with Benefits

Genre : Comedy | Romance
Runtime : 109 Min
Director : Will Gluck

Plot : Dylan and Jamie decides to add the acts of sex to their friendship and promises themselves that they won’t add feelings to it and their friendship will remain unharmed.

Review : Mila Kunis finally! I always wanted to see her after ‘Black Swan’. While deciding to watch this one, I had an idea that it’s gonna be similar to ‘No Strings Attached’ as the plot suggests. Well I was not quite wrong as the theme is just the same and moreover it’s like watching a remake or a sequel of that with the same story.

So basically the story is quite same with new stars. Girl and Boy meet and agree to have sex without getting emotionally involved although why they walk on this path is entirely different. But again I would like to say that the formula is directed in a pretty decent manner. The movie provides a perfect balance of emotions and comedy. There are some liners and punches which will make you laugh as well as the cheesy bits to maintain the mood. Ah I liked the cinematography. Talking about the acts, Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis share a perfect chemistry on-screen. They look good as a couple. Mila Kunis is too hot for me to concentrate on her acting but she has done a nice job and Justin Timberlake is actually humorous.

The movie is a bit slow in the latter half but maybe it was necessary to build the romantic atmosphere after the fun shower in the former half. I guess it might have received more positive reviews if it had come before ‘No Strings Attached’. If you want just an entertainment with an essence of romance, this will provide you sufficiently. Overall the movie is good and I liked it simply.

Final Verdict : Watch it guys. If not for anything else, then just for Mila Kunis although I am sure it won’t disappoint you at all if you don’t have high expectations.
